The Bethel Park Rotary Club’s November Student of the Month is Bethel Park High School senior Emma Smith. She was recently recognized at a small luncheon at The Garden Restaurant [4912 Gardenville Road, Pittsburgh, PA, 15236].
Smith is a National Honor Society member with an outstanding 4.465 weighted GPA. She is also the treasurer for the Interact club and has participated in the club’s Adopt-A-Family Christmas event. They are currently collecting winter clothing and toiletries for Ukrainian orphans.
Emma competes in doubles events for the WPIAL champion girls tennis team. She also volunteers her time at sectional training centers, where she helps mentor young aspiring players. In the spring, Smith throws javelin for the Hawks’ girls track & field team.
Smith is also a member of the Student Government Association (SGA) and the Science Club. Also, last
year, she was part of a group that helped found the school’s Latin Club, which she has found very rewarding.
“When people think of the world languages being taught at Bethel Park, naturally, they think of Spanish, French and German,” she said. “We founded the Latin club as a way of reminding people that there are four world languages taught at Bethel Park, with each bringing its own value.”
The senior said she started taking Latin initially because she thought she wanted to be a veterinarian, but that is no longer true. She is, however, still considering a career in medicine, just with human patients.
“Nursing intrigues me, especially as a nurse anesthetist,” she said.
Emma is the daughter of Tracy and Glenn Smith and has a younger brother named Caden (16), a high school sophomore. She has yet to make her college decision but is considering John Carroll University near Cleveland.
“My dad went to JCU, so I’m familiar with it, and it definitely interests me, but I am still going through the college selection process,” she laughed.
Students are nominated for Bethel Park Rotary Student of the Month by administrators, teachers, students, or community members. They are chosen based on academic achievements, extracurricular activities, civic honors and awards, organization membership, and leadership.
At a monthly luncheon, honorees receive a certificate acknowledging their contribution to their community. For more information on Rotary and its mission, please ask any Rotarians about it or visit bethelparkrotary.org. You can also visit their Facebook page.
