The Bethel Park High School hockey team reveled in the success of three outstanding players - Ethan Cooley, Anthony Karner and Zach Mazzacone - who each earned well-deserved all-star status this season.
All seniors, Cooley, Karner and Mazzacone were selected to represent the PIHL Class 3A all-star team, marking a significant accomplishment for these talented players.
Coach Mike Schall was understandably proud of his seniors’ achievements. “It’s a great accomplishment for these three players and we are excited to see them recognized for their efforts this year,” he said. “They are part of a large senior class and have been great leaders for our team.”
As of Jan. 12, Cooley, the team’s Captain, led the Black Hawks in scoring with an impressive four goals and 16 assists, totaling 20 points. Expressing his excitement about the all-star game, Cooley said, “Past years have looked like a blast, and I’m excited to take part in that game and have something else to look forward to.”
Alternate Captain Karner, who had 13 points on the season (eight goals, five assists), admitted to being surprised that he was selected. “My point totals aren’t as high as most other all-stars,” he said.
Mazzacone, also an Alternate Captain, played a crucial role in the Bethel Park defense that demonstrated resilience by allowing only 36 goals in 13 games. He expressed his excitement about playing in the all-star game, highlighting the anticipation surrounding the event.
At press time, Bethel Park found themselves in a tight race in the Class 3A division, with multiple teams vying for the top spot. Coach Schall acknowledged the intensity of the division and emphasized the team's commitment to continual improvement.
Cooley and Karner were joined up front by fellow senior forwards Will Alborg, Ryan Tierney and Doug Hartman, along with key contributions from junior defenseman Vincent Klingensmith.
The goaltending tandem of sophomore Kevin Teamann and senior Reilly Gusky also played a pivotal role in securing many of the team's victories.
With a determined mindset and Coach Schall's emphasis on finishing strong, the senior-laden team, including the all-star trio, is geared towards bringing back the winning culture that Bethel Park hockey has been known for in the past. The players were eagerly looking forward to concluding the 2023-24 season on a positive note.
