In October, Bethel Park High School students and their families looking to jumpstart their college search or continue it will have the opportunity to meet with representatives from all over the country without ever having to leave the community at the 2023 South Hills College and Career Fair, held at Bethel Park High School.
As many as 2,000 area students are expected to converge on the high school campus to meet with more than 100 vendors about various educational and professional opportunities, including two-year and four-year colleges, various technical programs and trade schools, and various options within the armed services.
Bethel Park High School counselor Mr. Michael Bruce, who spearheads Bethel Park’s role in the college fair, insists that events like this are integral to any student’s development. “When you are just a sophomore or junior in high school, college seems so far away, but it’s not,” he warned. “Events like this can be eye-opening and start students down a road that will be very important to their future.”
Representatives from various schools and organizations will chat with the students about what they offer regarding programming, lifestyle, setting, and many other factors.
“It’s a great way for our kids to see all that’s out there to help them make an informed decision about their future,” said Bruce.
Bethel Park students were joined by their peers from Baldwin, Canon-McMillan, Keystone Oaks, Mt. Lebanon, Peters Township, South Fayette, South Park, and Upper St. Clair high schools. According to Bruce, pulling off an event of this scope was a group effort.
“One of the most exciting aspects of this event is it allows us to get to know our counterparts at other area schools and work with them on something really meaningful to everyone: helping their students succeed,” he said.
Bruce says digital business cards will be an exciting new feature of this year’s college fair. All students in attendance will be required to register for the fair using the Strive Fair QR Code. “That will serve as their ‘digital business card,’ which will allow the school reps to track who is interested in their school,” he said.
